OK, well you MUST read the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams because not one of the movies or series has ever been as funny as the books
But also in the funny category there is a series called Myth Adventures by Robert Asprin. The first one is called Another Fine Myth (yes, a pun on "that's another fine mess you've gotten us into). It does help to read the first couple, but from there on you can skip around a lot. And they re-released those first two as a single volume...
hmmm, should I recommend mysteries? anyone here read those?

You have to know my two favorite authors of all time....Edgar Allen Poe and Dr. Seuss (Whos Birthday is today). Two other noteworthy authors are J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. All four are literary Genius'.
Must reads before your demise.
Lord of the Rings (+hobbit and Similarian) Hamlet The Great Divorce The Raven(Short poem story, but so worth the read as well as anything by E.A. Poe) The Chronicles of Narnia 1984 Anything Dr. Seuss (The Cat and the Hat is one of the really great ones) The Screwtape Letters 1984 Harry Potter series (book 3 and 5 are my favorites)
hmmm what else...

Anything by R.A Salvatore or Terry Goodkind's Sword Of Truth Series. But my favorite is R.A Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt books starting with the first one "Homeland." They are the best sci/fi fantasy books ever!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer <3 My favourite book. Go Jean-Baptiste Grenouille! : D It has a movie, too. Which I can not wait to see ^_^
I recommend this book to people, who like the 18th hundred France, and likes details (Personally I skipped all the perfume-details from time to time <.<)
Stephen King is amazing : D So is Edgar Allen Poe ^.^ woah.

Terry Pratchett and any of his Disc World books They have a devoted fan club with people of all ages and are rather brilliantly quirky
There's so much other stuff I'd recommend but some of it's not age appropriate (like some of Anne Rices stuff)
